I’M BACK!!! Finally. I had a couple other projects going, but I am wrapping those up and ready to tackle some top priority products in your life that need detoxification. Awhile back I posted about the BEST non-toxic deodorant, and while it is awesome, I promised to find a more convenient option for those of us who just don’t have time to do it ourselves! Alas, I have found a safe effective deodorant for all of us.
When it comes to deodorant, there are a few ingredients I like to avoid altogether. These include aluminium (I avoid antiperspirants altogether), triclosan, parabens, pthalates, and fragrance. BUT, it also needs to work, which is the main issue with the less toxic options. For my husband and I, “working” means you don’t have to reapply it during a work day. That is a tall order, especially for guys!
I have tried SEVERAL less toxic deodorants, but I only found two that work. And, only one of those meets my “transparency” criteria. Let’s start with my #1 choice for a safe, effective deodorant you can buy!
Primally Pure: safe effective and convenient
Primally Pure (PP) is a great company in general. The deodorant meets all my criteria and then some:
>safe ingredient list
>it smells great (I’ve personally tried geranium & tea tree)
>it works, i.e. you do not have to reapply during the work day
>it did not cause irritation (if you suffer from welts, see post link at bottom of this page)
Not only does PP avoid the use of fragrance, but some of their unique ingredients actually provide additional health benefits. For example, the stick’s creaminess comes from tallow. PP’s tallow is made of fat tissue (suet) rendered from the cow after it has been processed. It is then gently heated to melt away the pure oils, which solidify into an ultra-moisturizer. PPs’ tallow contains a high concentration of fat soluble Vitamins A, D, and K in a balanced combination with their activators. Since the cows are grass-fed, the tallow also contains Vitamin E, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is an anti-inflammatory, as well as palmitoleic acid, which has natural antimicrobial properties. Other sources have found that tallow may also have some anti-cancer properties. PP ONLY uses tallow from organic and grass-fed cows that are raised outside on pasture.
The scents in Primally Pure DOs are created with organic essential oils. I confirmed with the company that they do in fact perform 3rd party testing to ensure the oils are pure and do not contain impurities.
Primally Pure products are made in the U.S. and are not tested on animals.
I have loved geranium, and my husband has been VERY happy with his tea tree stick. The Lavender and Charcoal sticks just arrived in the mail today – update to come, but I am sure they will be equally awesome!
Native Deodorant: the dreaded “f” word
Native Deodorant was a stick I tried awhile back, before I really got back into combing ingredient lists. I was surprised it worked so well. Unfortunately, when I did examine the list to see what was so different about it, I realized it had “fragrance” in it. This ingredient is easily missed during the ordering process because of some sneaky (in my opinion) website design. The only deodorant ingredient list accessible on the Native website is the unscented version. You are able to change your scent at the top of the page, but the ingredient list located below still belongs to the unscented stick. 🤨 This makes it seem like all their deodorants are fragrance-free, and they are not. This lack of tranparency is a red flag for me. I can attest to the fact that the vanilla and melaleuca scents work very well, but I cannot say that any of the scented sticks are safe due to the presence of fragrance.
If you want a safe, effective deodorant that is convenient, definitely go with Primally Pure. They offer a great subscription service so that you never run out. I’d recommend starting with shipments every 3 months then adjust as needed.

If you want a safe, effective, and budget-friendly deodorant option, check out my post on my favorite DIY deodorant recipe. Initially, you will spend about the same amount of money on ingredients that you would on 2 sticks of PP; however, those supplies will make multiple sticks.
If you’re thinking, “I’d love to switch to a safer deodorant, but every time I do, I get painful welts under my arms,” then click here – scroll to the last section – for a very simple and cheap fix. My husband had the exact same problem, and this 2-ingredient spray fixed it COMPLETELY! If you are 100% against DIY, I hear The Everything Spray from Primally Pure achieves the same result 🙂
Have you used Primally Pure? Do you have another safe yet effective deodorant? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments!
