Hi everyone! My name is Heidi. I am a full-time wife & mom, part-time physician assistant, and now part-time blogger.
Historically, I have never been one for “alternative medicine;” you know, chiropractors, acupuncture…all that hippie stuff ;). And when it came to western medicine, I was (and really still am) an “only when necessary” kind of girl. My family thought it was a little weird when I decided to go into the medical field, but I have a passion for helping, healing, and educating people. I am an advocate for knowing all of your options in all situations. You always have a choice, and the right one isn’t the same for everyone.
When we were starting to think about expanding our family, it hit me that everything I ate, breathed, and put on my body would find its way to my growing child. It was a frightening reality and I couldn’t help but begin to research everything to prepare for pregnancy. This included cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, eating organic, etc. Shortly after that a friend introduced me to doTERRA essential oils. In all honesty, I attended the class to be nice. (I did not believe in “the crunchy stuff,” remember?) However, I was intrigued enough that I bought a small kit.
Fast forward a few months, and I found myself in Cambodia with my husband who had a horrible case of food poisoning. All I had was an emergency medical kit and my oils. Since I didn’t think an IV, suture kit, or various bandages would be of any help, I turned to my oils. To make a long story short, the results were amazing. Both my husband and I became avid “oilers,” and it opened my mind to “other” ways of living.
Upon returning home from an epic 3 weeks in SE Asia, we got to work on growing our family. I had done lots of research and continued to delve into the safety of things we used on a daily to weekly basis. Needless to say, lots of changes were made. Then, the baby was born, and my desire to provide my child with a non-toxic, safe environment sky-rocketed.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to know everything about everything. It led to a lot of anxiety and the feeling that I was never doing enough. My Type A/perfectionist side soon took over. Instead of reading my Bible, I was researching household toxicities. Instead of enjoying family time, I was looking at every label and reading all the books. Needless to say, I was also driving my husband nuts. I realized I needed to find a happy medium between my desire to love and steward my child and my dependence on God.
I believe that a mother who is wanting to give her child the best “start to life” during such a huge developmental period is a wonderful goal and quite normal. However, any good thing can become an idol if you place that desire above God, or if you make the mistake of thinking you have control of the situation. I realized I was doing this when my short-temper and irritability became very apparent.
I think it is very important to do what you can to give your children a safe and loving home. The Bible speaks to the roles of mother, father, wife and husband as well the responsibility to honor our bodies. This will look different for everybody as we fulfill these roles within the resources and callings God has put in our lives. Not everyone has the funds to eat organic, wear organic clothing, use EMF shielding bed canopies (yes, that’s a thing), clean with essential oils, and wear clean make-up. Then there is the time issue. Ain’t nobody got time to be making their own baby food, lotions, deodorant, and activities for their toddlers that are educational AND entertaining. All while trying to exercise 30 minutes a day. No wonder anxiety in women and mothers is SO high these days.
So, to my point on why I created this blog: I want to provide useful information for ladies desiring to help their family live cleaner and less anxious lives. And I want to do this in a way that is glorifying to God.
First, I hope that you are pointed to God in each and every post. Second, I hope that the information I provide guides you in determining what is most important for your family to change while keeping you mindful that we CANNOT do it all, nor should we be trying. Full transparency: I DO NOT DO EVERYTHING I POST HERE NOR DO I USE ALL THE PRODUCTS I LIST HERE. The goal is to limit our toxic exposure, increase our family time, and improve our quality of life.
